Today compensation picks are going to be given out to teams based on players the teams lost the previous season due to free agency. The Packers should pick up at least one compensation picks. Last offseason the Packers lost Ahman Green and David Martin. The Packers will probably get around a 4th round pick for Ahman Green since he didn’t have a great season but he signed a huge contract. The Packers could receive up to a 3rd rounder for Green but i doubt the Packers will receive higher than a 4th. As far as David Martin we might receive a pick but if we do it will be a 6th or 7th rounder. The loss of David Martin is essentially made up for by the signing of Frank Walker last offseason. When the composition picks are officially given out I will update this post.

Update: The Packers ended up getting a 4th round compensation pick (pick 137 overall).

Reports are surfacing that the Packers will play their first game of the 2008 season against the Minnesota Vikings. The game is supposedly going to be one of the Monday night games that week. These are just rumors at this point but I am assuming they will be true since I don’t know why people would make up what the opening weekend games will be. If this rumor is true don’t be surprised that Brett Favre’s number is retired that night as well. There are many reason why the Packers could retire Favre’s number during the game. First it’s the first game without Brett Favre starting behind center. Second it is against the rival Vikings who Brett had so much success against in his career. Finally it will be a prime time game so everyone will be able to see it. While Favre might decide to have his number retired during a different game I would not be surprised if they retire the #4 on the first game of next season.

Life After Brett Favre

Know that Brett Favre has decided to retire, what are the Packers going to do.

Obviously the Packers are going to start Aaron Rodgers. While there are plenty of Packer fans that are scared of life without Favre I am cautiously optimistic. I believe Aaron Rodgers could be a great QB. I don’t doubt Aaron Rodgers’ ability. Every year with the Packers Aaron has improved and this last season he showed us how good he could be against the Cowboys. While we probably won’t get the amazing plays that Brett was famous for I believe Aaron will give us a more consistent passing game. Aaron will probably be more accurate that the current Favre and he probably won’t throw as many interceptions. This does not mean that Rodgers will be better than what Favre could have been this year. Rodgers doesn’t have the leadership that Favre had (at least not yet). As I mentioned earlier Rodgers probably won’t make as many big plays as Favre. I do believe Rodgers will fill in really well though.

The only big concern I have about Rodgers is his durability. Favre was the most durable QB in the history of the NFL. Rodgers so far has not shown that he is a durable as Favre. Rodgers has gotten hurt twice as a Packer. I wouldn’t be really concerned though since one was a freak injury and one wasn’t that serious. If Rodgers gets hurt again though I would start worrying. In case Rodgers gets hurt the Packers better bring in a veteran QB. There are plenty on the market. Along with a veteran I expect the Packers to pick a QB in rounds 3-5. This QB will probably be more of a developmental QB.

While it is going to be hard to replace Favre I think we will do a good job with Aaron Rodgers and I expect to see the Packers in the playoffs again this year and hopefully this year the Packers will make the Super Bowl.

A Tribute to Brett Favre

Yesterday a new era began in Green Bay. The Packers fearless leader for 16 years decided to call it quits. It was a sad day for the state of Wisconsin and also for the rest of the NFL. The NFL will never have another player like Brett Favre. Brett Favre was one of a kind. While earning millions of dollars and being a huge celebrity Brett never thought of himself as anything more than the average person. Attitudes like this are rare in professional sports and that is what I will miss most about Brett Favre. Brett Favre will go down as one of the best NFL players ever and in my opinion the best QB to ever play the game.

With Brett Favre retiring the Packers will begin a new era under Aaron Rodgers. This will definently be a change for me since Brett has been the QB of the Packers ever since I was 4 years old. I don’t remember a Packers team without him. It’s going to be hard to watch a Packers team that is not lead by Brett Favre. While it will be hard to move on it had to come someday. Brett wanted to retire on the top of his game and he was ready to retire. I respect his decision and he earned the right to whatever decision he wanted with his 16 years of service for the Packers. People that believe that Brett retired because TT didn’t pursue any big free agents are wrong. Brett did not make a life changing decision just because we didn’t get Randy Moss. The Packers never needed Randy Moss. Brett retired because he felt it was time to go.

While I wish Brett would have come back for another season and another shot at the Super Bowl, I respect his decision. It is just going to be hard to watch the Packers and not see #4 behind center. While it will be hard to imagine the Packers without Favre we all knew that it was going to happen sometime. While the era has come to an end, I am so glad that I had the privilege to watch the best QB in the history of the NFL, Brett Favre.

Hi my name is Eric Mortensen. I am the main writer on Packers Nation. I have been a Packer fan for my whole life. While I am only 20 years old I am knowledgeable about everything related to the Packers from around 1995 to the present day. I am also an avid Packer memorabilia collector and have probably amassed several hundred Packers items and my collection is growing immensely every year. I am here to keep everyone informed on America's team and also to give my own opinion on what is going on with the Packers.
